Korčula celebrates 20-year Moreska anniversary

place: Korčula
The Dalmatian island of Korčula has celebrated the 20-year anniversary since the traditional sword dance Moreška, which dates back hundreds of years on the island, was revived and performed for the Korčula town holiday.

The Moreška dance is an elaborate production involving two groups of dancers, engaging in a mock battle over the fate of a veiled young woman and is performed to thousands of tourists each year to the southern Dalmatian island of Korčula.

The Moreška, which dates back to at least the mid-17th century, was originally performed on special occasions and especially on the Feast Day of "Sveti Todor" (Saint Theodore), Korčula's patron saint on 29 July, in a lavish presentation which could last for up to two hours.
