Radio amateurs to make expedition to Vanuatu

time: 21.01.2010. - 28.02.2010.
place: Republic of Vanuatu
Radio club 'Pazin' members will take part in the 'Vanuatu - YJ 2010 – Expedition.' It will be an expedition to the Republic of Vanuatu, an island nation located in the South Pacific, from 21 to 28 January.

The team's goal is to make radio contact with all world amateur radio operators from Vanuatu.

The team will have two medium-power stations on the air and be able to log more than 10,000 contacts in 6 to 7 days of activity despite the sun’s cycle and the rainy season in the South Pacific.

Expedition members Hrvoje Horvat, Marko Pernic, Franko Bertosa and Zeljko Krestelica have been preparing for five months. They will take with them equipment weighing 100 kilos.

Vanuatu, located some 1,750 kilometres east of Australia, is an archipelago of 83 islands, most of them of volcanic origin.

The team claims Vanuatu is among the 100 most-wanted locations by amateur radio operators, citing many different sources.

They said: "It is a location that is far away from home, far away from usual radio operating practice and a fascinating country that requires an interesting trip to reach it. It will be a great adventure for all of us combined with a hobby that we love so much. We expect a lot of rain, sun, mosquitoes and tropical experience."

Team members are experienced radio operators, all with over 10 years of active radio operating experience. It will be the first Pacific Ocean experience for most of them.
