First Short Film Marathon

On Saturday, 21 December, 25 independent cinemas in 23 Croatian cities and towns will host The Shortest Day in the Year 21/12 – First Short Film Marathon. This is a part of the international event Le jour le plus Court (The Shortest Day), launched in France and promoting short film production on the winter solstice.

On the Northern Hemisphere winter officially begins on 21 December, the shortest day of the year – this year it comes exactly on 21 December at 6:11 pm CET. The initiative Le jour le plus Court (The Shortest Day) celebrates this day with short film screenings in different countries, including Croatia this year.

The Shortest Day in the Year 21/12 – The First Short Film Marathon is brought to 25 independent cinemas in 23 Croatian cities by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre. From the early morning until midnight the audience will be able to see a total of 45 short fiction, animated, documentary and children’s films. Local cinema is represented by Krsto Papić’s cult documentaries, recent fiction and documentary films by award-winning young Croatian filmmakers, and a rich animated film programme. The foreign selection includes works by the famous French animator Michel Ocelot, while the category named This is not a funny program includes short European comedies.

The marathon takes place in the following towns and cities: Čakovec, Daruvar, Dubrovnik, Gospić, Koprivnica, Kutina, Novska, Osijek, Pakrac, Pazin, Poreč, Prelog, Pula, Rijeka, Rovinj, Samobor, Sinj, Sisak, Split (cinemas Central, Zlatna vrata), Velika Gorica, Vodice, Zabok, Zagreb (cinemas Europa, Tuškanac). Next to HAVC’s programme, the Tuškanac cinema will screen a special programme selected exclusively for this occasion by the Croatian Film Association.

Admission to all screenings is free of charge.
The project called The Shortest Day was launched in 2011 by the French National Centre of Cinema and the Moving Image (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée) in cooperation with the Short Film Agency (L'Agence du court métrage) with the objective to promote the rich short film repertoire of the country. Following a huge success in France, the project went international – Germany, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Norway, Poland, Canada, the Czech Republic – and now Croatia.
