Rijeka to be European Capital of Culture in Croatia in 2020

The selection panel of independent experts responsible for assessing the Croatian cities competing to be European Capital of Culture in 2020 has recommended that Rijeka should be awarded the title. The other three cities short-listed after the initial pre-selection round in May 2015 were Dubrovnik, Osijek and Pula. The formal designation of Rijeka by the relevant Croatian authorities is expected to take place in the coming months.

IAB01- Industrial Art Biennale – Labin

Industrial Art Biennale is art festival project of Labin Art Express XXI (L.A.E. XXI), which was held first as a pilot-project in 2014 in Labin, and from 2015 biennially, i.e. every two years, in Labin as well as at some other industrial locations in Istria (Raša, Pula, Rovinj,…).

Martina Zelenika MOON exhibits in Maribor

Multimedia artist Martina Zelenika MOON currently presents her exhibition titled MetaPerspective’ at Gallery KiBela, Multimedia Centre KID Kibla in Maribor. The exhibition is on view till 19 September.


Kaunas Biennial, the biggest contemporary art festival in the Baltic States, will begin its 10th season on September 18th with the exhibition Threads: Fantasmagoria about Distance, curated by the well-known art theorist and curator Nicolas Bourriaud.

3rd DANUBE BIENNALE with Croatian artists

The 3rd DANUBE BIENNALE presents 22 artists from the young and middle generations from ten Danube basin countries - Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. Croatia will be presented with Nemanja Cvijanović, Tanja Deman, Paulina Jazvić, Kristian Kožul and Pavle Pavlović.


This year's edition of Cinematiac presents exhibition with works by  Sanja Iveković, Dalibor Martinis, Goran Trbuljak, Claudio Ambrosini,  Michele Sambin, Luigi Viola, Živa Kraus and Zdravko Milić. Curated by Branka Benčić. The exhibition remains opened till 14 August at MMC LUKA, Istarska 30, Pula, Croatia. Opening on 19 June,  20.00 h

10th Museum Night

Croatian Museum Association is organizing the 10th Museum Night under the title "Inventions and Discoveries – Nikola Tesla, a universal mind".

Deimantas Narkevicius: Da Capo

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU) in Zagreb presents the first major solo exhibition of the Lithuanian artist and filmmaker Deimantas Narkevičius in Croatia. “Da Capo” is the final step of a cycle of three exhibitions, held between 2013 and 2014 in Museo Marino Marini in Florence and Le Magazin in Grenoble: each with a different curator, concept and display, developed anew for the specific context and location.

Damir Očko: Studies on Shivering

'THE CREW 2' in New York

'THE CREW 2' is the second addition of the exhibition that will present artists from Matthew Barney Studio. The exhibition will be opened from September 13 till 16. Performance program will take place on September 13 and 14.

Tomislav Gotovac: Pure Words

In the exhibition titled Pure Words works from the late 1970s to 1990s of Tomislav Gotovac will be on display at the Galerie Michaela Stock. The art exhibited challenges traditional assumptions that text (language) is the primary and most efficient communication medium. The exhibition is on view between 27 June and 30 August.

Festival of French Culture in Croatia

Initiated by the French president François Hollande and Croatian president Ivo Josipović with diplomatic approval from all sides and on all levels, during the meeting of Mr Hollande and Premier Milanovic in October 2013 the first meeting was held with a follow-up announcement that Festival of French Culture will be held in Croatia in 2015.

On the last day of January, January 31, an important event called Museum Night was organized in 2007 that highlights Croatian cultural attributes. Since then  this is a national program that includes museum institutions from fourteen Croatian cities.

Breaking the records in Mexico

Museum of Broken Relationships  had a great  to their call for donation for the upcoming exhibition in Mexico. Due to limited display capacity curators have to make a selection and decide which items will be displayed at Museo del Objeto del Objeto from March 12 till June 8.

Damir Očko exhibiting in Graz

Croatian contemporary artist Damir Očko is presenting his first Austrian solo exhibition titled Studies on Shivering which is set to take place from 1 February to 6 March at Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien (KM–) in Graz.

Jagoda Buić's exhibition extended in Trieste

The Revoltella Museum where the works of Jagoda Buic, a famous costume designer, production designer and director, are being exhibited for the first time in Italy will be extended till 12 January. Buic is an internationally recognized artist, her works can be found in the world’s most important museums such as The Metropolitan in New York, Musée d’art modern de la Ville in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Stedelijk in Amsterdam, etc.

Festival Kroatien Kreativ successfully ended

Officially opened during Leipzig Book Fair in March, Festival Kroatien Kreativ has been successfully ended. During nine months the festival hosted almost hundred events in Germany presenting Croatia as a new EU member.

Under the lights of Amsterdam

Museum of Broken Relationships is currently on view in Amsterdam's  Oude Kerk cathedral. The exhibition was organized in cooperation with Annemarie de Wildt, curator of the Amsterdam Museum. The display is open to visitors until March 2, 2014.

Project Space: Inverted House

Opening at Tate Modern on 22 November, this collaborative exhibition between Tate and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade showcases the work of Tina Gverović and Siniša Ilić for their first UK museum show.

Renata Poljak to exhibit in France and Austria

Contemporary artist Renata Poljak currently exhibits at the 20th Sélestat Biennial of Contemporary Art from 21 to 27 September in Sélestat, France. Poljak also partakes a group exhibition Was ist Kunst?… (Resuming Fragmented Histories ) that is a part of the "Steirischer herbst" series of events in Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz on view from 21 September to 21 November.

'Japan meets Zagreb' exhibition opened in Zagreb

The exhibition "Japan meets Zagreb - the glow of Japanese contemporary art", which feature some 250 Japanese art pieces, was opened in Zagreb's Ethnographic Museum on 10 September, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Croatia-Japan diplomatic relations and as part of the International Japan-Croatia Meeting of Artists.

An exhibition "The artist on holidays_2013" opened on Friday night at the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art and will present the works of eleven exclusively Avant Garde artists created over the summer in Istria.

Preparations for the museum’s third visit to the Far East are underway. After visiting Singapore and the Philippines, the Museum of Broken Relationships is once again travelling eastward, this time to spend the summer in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. 

Kožarić's exhibition in Haus des Kunst

Olafur Eliasson and David Adjaye at Lopud Island

The South London Gallery and Calvert 22 present 'Unknown Heroine', the first exhibition in the UK of Croatian artist, Sanja Iveković. The importance of Iveković’s pioneering work in collage, film, performance and installation tackling issues of female identity, consumerism and historical amnesia has recently been acknowledged by her inclusion in dOCUMENTA (13), as well as through major retrospective exhibitions at Mudam Luxembourg and MoMA New York.
