Nu:Write Festival

time: 16.11.2010. - 20.11.2010.
place: Zagreb
Nu:Write Theatre Festival Zagreb is a festival of new writing that will open, in its first edition, on November 16th and last until November 20th 2010, with the goal of connecting young theatrical and performing artists from Croatia with their peers from the rest of the world.

The mainstays of the festival are contemporary drama, physical theatre and modern puppetry.

This year’s festival will be dedicated to young British theatre companies and writers of renown in London, which the Zagreb audience is yet to be acquainted with.

Popular theatre companies Paines Plough, Nabokov, Tangram Theatre Company, Box of Tricks, Tristan Bates Theatre, Folded Feather and writer Phil Porter all confirmed their participation.

The project aims to attract young urban audiences – as well as artists - who will not only be able to socialise and interact at theatre performances, concerts and after-parties, but also benefit from workshops held by renowned British and Croatian artists.

British theatre artists are often forced to create their own opportunities by developing own material due to fierce competition in the theatrical milieu. Nu:Write Theatre Festival was inspired by this approach to doing theatre and decided to introduce it to Croatia. It is a sad fact that Croatia is swelling with young talent; writers and theatre artists who do not get enough chances to display their work, and are rarely provided with opportunities to work outside national borders. In this way, they would be given the opportunity to come into contact and forge relations within the international theatrical scene.

A major focus of this project is also new drama and raising awareness of the need for greater investments into contemporary Croatian dramatic writing and production. The workshops that are to be held intend to give local writers, actors and directors the tools needed to develop new drama within the Croatian dramatic arts scene.

The ultimate aim is to establish a dramatic studio in Zagreb that will serve as fertile grounds for new Croatian drama, offering young artists the chance to express themselves and realise their personal goals. A positive example of cooperation will be provided by a Croatian actors’ studio, Studio Kubus, and British Tristan Bates Theatre, who will produce a piece exclusively for the festival.
