Subverzive Festival 2014

time: 3.5.2014. - 17.5.2014.
place: Zagreb, Croatia
organiser: Subverzive Festival
The 7th Subversive Festival, taking place from 3 to 17 May in Zagreb, serves as a melting pot for the world's leading intellectuals, researchers, artists, filmmakers, activists and socially engaged citizens. This year's Subversive Festival, under the title of Power and Freedom in the Time of Control: Networks – Ideology – Alternatives, raises the questions of how bureaucratization and fragmentation of social structure bring about the intrusive networking of control field lines beneath the threshold of social visibility.

Within the most diverse program so far, including the film, forum and conference sections, the festival will host more than a hundred lecturers and screen more than 40 top-notch films, alongside traditional fair of engaged literature, and School of Contemporary Humanities, which offers workshops and lectures that will deal with the issue of cultural violence of capitalism.

In continuation with the last year's accompanying music program, Subversive Festival in collaboration with Žedno uho brings to Zagreb the activist and charismatic musician – Rachid Taha. Within his European tour and accompanied by his 8-member band, Taha for the first time visits Croatia. This eccentric and authentic Frenchman with Algerian roots has won the hearts of audience with his character, extraordinary live performances and unique musical expression, best described as world music. Rachid Taha's music has something to offer to lovers of a variety of music genres – from rock, punk and electronic music, to oriental rhythms, like chaabi and rai.

The concert takes place on 11 May 2014 in Culture Factory, and the following day (12 May) Taha will give a lecture within the Conference section of the Festival at 7 p.m. in Europa Cinema on the topics of migrations, the Arab Spring, protests in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the role of art in the sociality devastated by crisis and recession, violence in Ukraine etc.
