Human Rights Film Festival #8: What is a public?

time: 6.12.2010. - 11.12.2010.
place: Zagreb, Rijeka (Croatia)
organiser: MaMa & Mochvara & CDU & Filmaktiv
Human Rights Film Festival (HRFF) is an annual film festival and its 8th installment will be held from 6th to 11th of December in Kino Europa, Dokukino Croatia (Zagreb) and Art-kino Croatia (Rijeka).

The topic of this year’s festival is crystallized in a question: What is a public? … question mark indicating that a public is something permanently and jointly negotiated and created, disputed and agreed upon.

Therefore a public – both as a concept and a practice – that would be fixed and definite is a fake, instrumental just to the few, not beneficial for all.

'Kino-Principle: what moves us intimately, should be shared publicly'
Alexander Kluge

Within the film-programme the organizer announces the retrospective of German film-maker Alexander Kluge, whose artistic and organizational engagement, is a prime example of how artists’ practice and critical intellectuality can provoke and question the existing forms of the public life, while also being able to create new forms of a public.

Kluge – at the same time, an important director, producer, writer and publicist – for fifty years now queries what is a public as space where experiences and sentiments are shared.
In the main-programme some of the most intriguing features in 2010 will be shown (soon more details!), and there will also be a talk-programme dealing with issues of human rights (lectures, panels, book-promotions).

Like  in previous installments the Festival is organized in collaboration with partners from the civil society and we shall again mark the International Human Rights Day (December 10).

The Festival is run by two prominent Croatian independent cultural organizations – Multimedia Institute and Culture Development Association „CDA“ (both organizations being publicly most visible for their respective venues: net.cultural club MaMa and club Mochvara). Their partner in Rijeka is Filmaktiv.
