place: USA
organiser: International Press Academy
The Croatian minority co-production Circles, directed by Srđan Golubović and written by Srđan Koljević and Melina Pota Koljević, was nominated for the Satellite Award in the best foreign film category. The award is presented by the International Press Academy with a seat in Los Angeles, considered one of the most reliable indicators for potential Oscar nominations.

The award-winning film Circles, directed by Srđan Golubović and written by Srđan Koljević and Melina Pota Koljević, is nominated for the prestigious annual Hollywood Satellite Award in the best foreign film category. The film officially represents Serbia and it is a Serbian-German-Slovenian-Croatian co-production. The Croatian producer is Boris T. Matić from the Propeler Film production company.

The category includes ten nominated titles, with this year’s critics’ favourites and award-winning festival titles – The Hunt by Thomas Vinterberg (Denmark), Blue Is the Warmest Colour by Abdellatif Kechiche (France), La grande bellezza by Paolo Sorrentino (Italy), The Broken Circle Breakdown by Felix Van Groeningen (Belgium) and Past by Asghar Farhadi (Iran), and also Four Corners (South Africa), Metro Manilla (United Kingdom) and Bethlehem (Israel).

The Satellite Award has been presented since 1996 by the International Press Academy, with a seat in Los Angeles. It gathers news writers from the States and other countries which write about the entertainment industry and most of them are officially accredited at MPAA.

In addition to several other film awards like the Golden Globe, Independent Spirit, National and Board of Review, the Satellite is considered one of the most reliable indicators of which films and individuals would be nominated for the Academy Award. Circles is this year’s Serbian Oscar candidate in the best non-English film category. Out of the record-breaking 76 countries that submitted their films to this category, early in January the semi-final list containing nine titles will be published, while the five Oscar nominees will be announced on 16 January 2014.

Spanning the period of 20 years, Circles follow several stories connected by one traumatic event from the Bosnian war. The film stars Leon Lučev, Nebojša Glogovac, Aleksandar Berček and Hristina Popović. The film is currently in distribution across Croatian cinemas.
