8th International Symposium for Theory and Design in the Digital Age

time: 07.08.2011. - 14.08.2011.
place: JMC Cultural Centre Grožnjan, Istria, Croatia
Eighth International Symposium for Theory and Design in the Digital Age under slogan 'Social Consciousness' with a workshop in architecture will take place from 7th to 14th August in Groznjan, Croatia.

Is it even ‘possible’ in the Digital age? Social Networking became the main issue last years, but is it enough? Are we able to address so called Integral Reality by architectural means? Could today’s ad-hoc communities substitute disintegrated neighbourhoods of the past? Is generativity a system’s capacity to underpin, inflect or saturate our social consciousness?

This and many other topics will be presented and discussed bay a selection of international experts:

ATELIER BOW-WOW
Tokyo-based Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kaijima established one of the most innovative practices working today. Achieving near cult status among students around the world, they have built a career confronting the challenges posed by dense urban environments. Their city houses enclosed in vibrant, idiosyncratic forms are distinguished by their capacity to accommodate the changing needs of the occupants. Atelier Bow-Wow has a dedicated research division that has published a number of treatises on vernacular architecture. They have represented Japan at last year’s Venice Biennale.

Roger Riewe, RIEGLER-RIEWE
Based in Graz, he founded Riegler Riewe architects in 1987, together with Florian Riegler. Their works have received numerous awards and have been internationally published and presented. Riewe deals with architectural topics beyond form, with architecture as a background, of everyday life, and its sensation and signatureless architecture. He focuses on new materials and their use in architecture and on the demand for as yet unavailable materials as a demand of architecture. Riewe is head of the Institute for Architecture Technology at Graz University of Technology.

James Njoo, MUTA
Architect and urbanist based in Paris. Principal of MUTA design studio. Currently Associate Professor at the Paris-La Villette School of Architecture and Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Two-time winner of the Europan architectural design competition (1994/2004). Former collaborator in the office of Rem Koolhaas/OMA architects in Rotterdam (1990–91). Member of the scientific committee of the Grand Paris international urbanism consultation (2008–09). Member of the Gerphau Urban Research group in Paris since 2009.

PENEZIĆ & ROGINA
architects
Zagreb-based Vinko Penezić & Krešimir Rogina have received awards six times at Shinkenchiku and Central Glass competitions in Tokyo and have exhibited three times at Venice Biennale. They are professors at the Academy of Applied Arts, University of Rijeka and guest professors at the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, France. P&R established the international symposium/workshop in architecture in Grožnjan in 1989. They realised a number of projects and buildings of different typologies, currently the Lantern/Lighthouse of Friendship in Tokamachi, Niigata, Japan.

Ivan Rašković, AGM studio
Assistant professor at the Department of Architectural and Urban Design at the Belgrade Faculty of Architecture. As a designer, he takes special interest in the phenomenon of contemporary contents located within historical sites, in principles of regional folklore architecture and their potential in contemporary design, as wll as design research and theory. As a group member and freelancer, Rašković won over twenty competition prices, along with six professional awards. He has published several theoretical works and is involved in professional conferences and workshops.

Workshop: WHAT IS THE QUESTION?
Anticipatory architecture was one of the most prominent theses of renowned British architect Cedric Price (1934–2003) who lead the workshop in Grožnjan in 1990. How can it be applied to the situation in which we are in? Are we able to anticipate architectural frameworks for the upcoming requirements of our fast-changing society? Enlighten us with your exceptional ideas, because the best participant will get a grant for the next year’s symposium!
