Croatian Artists at Venice Biennales
|
Croatian Artists at Venice Biennales This year, under the title Patterns of Visibility, commissioner Leonida Kovač "proceeding from the thesis that reality is the effect of representational practices, and furthermore from the fact that today, in a period of image proliferation, the images themselves frequently make invisible the social context of that which they are depicting" chose the works by artists Boris Cvjetanović and Ana Opalić to represent Croatia at the 2003 Venice Biennale. Tomislav Gotovac exhibited his work as a guest artist at the Utopia Station curated by Molly Nesbit, Hans Ulrich Obrist and Rikrit Tiravanija. It was just one of the projects of the Dreams and Conflict - The Viewers Dictatorship, 50th International Visual Arts Exhibition at the Venice Biennale. For this exhibition Gotovac created a poster entitled "Lois meets Hank’, showing the famous supporting actors Lois Smith, whose most notable bit was in the East of Eden movie, and Hank Warden who - among other things - was a supporting act in Big Sky by Howard Hawks. In the utopia by Gotovac, the supporting actors with impressive film credits become the main characters.
